The best memoirs throughout literary history have managed to both educate and entertain readers over the years. They have introduced characters as compelling as any work of fiction - the world is able to know Elie Wiesel, Anne Frank, David Sedaris, and Maya Angelou through the pages of their. A memoir is a personal, historical account of an event or time period. Students get to know this nonfiction genre, different from an autobiography, through a series of excerpts from the memoirs of Gertrude Stein, Winston Churchill, and Henry David Thoreau. After reading each passage, students describe what makes it a memoir. A short memoir is a type of creative nonfiction. It is a personal essay that reflects on a theme or an event in a writer's life.
